Sunday’s coming

July 5th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Great place, Leadership, no way

You have to be very sure of yourself and that what you are doing is connecting with “your crowd” to be able to spoof yourself.  Great job Northpoint!  Keep raising the bar.

Caffeinated Nation

June 29th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in no way

The numbers are in and the USA is the most caffeinated nation, and it’s not. While we have more Starbucks than any other country, over 11,000, and consume more coffee than any other country, we aren’t even in the top ten of consumption per capita! Really? Americans consume 105.9 liters of coffee per capita, ranking sixteenth worldwide.

It’s hard to believe that fifteen countries drink more coffee per capita that we do, but it’s true.  Even the tea drinking Brits out coffee us, consuming 134.7 liters per capita. What country takes the gold? Finland with 608.2 liters per capita followed by Norway with 322.6 liters, then Denmark with 180.6 liters.  I see a pattern here. Countries with those very cold winters and long dark nights keep saying  pass me the coffee.  Historically the very cold countries have had the biggest coffee addiction, but that is changing.  Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer is on track to pass the USA as the largest consumer of coffee.  They are even serving cafe com leite – coffee with milk – in school meals for kids 5 and up. Wow.  “Could I have a decaf with my mac and cheese?”

Ron’s got it together…

June 15th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Leadership, Simple, no way, unChristian

Several years ago I made a friend in Michigan that has really challenged me to think,  rather than to take for granted a lot of things.  That friend is Ron Martoia.  Ron is now published and a frequent speaker-teacher at innovative conferences around the world.  He is one of the most well read and articulate people I have ever met, with a charismatic personality that make you love him.  Once again he is on the edge with a new publication,  ttTribe-Manifesto . While this pub contains a pitch to join a subscription learning community I think he is right on with a lot of his observations and conclusions.  Rather than give you a few “sound bites” I’ve included a link to his pub so you can read, enjoy and be challenged.  I think you will enjoy this introduction to Ron if you’ve never read or heard him, and if you’ve read him in the past, you’ll recognize this as another of his insightful works.

After you’ve read ttTribe-Manifesto,  feel free to comment and we can chat.

Bueller, Bueller, anyone, anyone?

April 14th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in no way

I had one of my bubbles, “burst” today.  One of my all time favorite movies is “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”.  It provides a throw back to the old days of school mischief that does not involve the tough stuff that happens today in our schools.  One of the many classic lines in the movie is when the teacher asks, “Bueller, Bueller, anyone, anyone?”  I love using this line when teaching and watching those in the room either smile because they get it or smile because they think I’m crazy.

Back to my bubble that burst.  (For those not familiar with the movie), Ferris drives a red Ferrari in the movie as he makes his way around town.

Ferris Bueller's Car

It is a very hot car, that is in mint condition and is rarely driven by the owner.  Of course Ferris drives it like a high school student, hard and fast.  The car is going on sale Sunday.  The problem with the sale of the Ferrari, is that it was not a Ferrari, it IS an MG, topped with a fiberglass Ferrari body to look like the real thing.  Bummer! Ferris, we have been deceived for all these years.

I have decided to ignore the lie presented to us by the movie industry and hold onto the memories of a fun spring day, out driving around with my best friend and a pretty girl.  I can’t believe the movies have lied to us…. anyone, anyone?

Marketing genius

February 8th, 2010 | 2 Comments | Posted in Leadership, Simple, no way

Buzz, that’s what marketing Gurus try to generate.  Create conversation and excitement about their product-event. They want to have everyone talking about “IT”.  The Focus on the Family marketing folks pulled off what I think is the biggest win of 2010.  Everybody has been talking about “their ad” that is airing during the Super Bowl.  The most watched TV show of the year.  The show that charges more for its commercials than anyone else.  The show that creates all the buzz with its over-the-top commercials.

Everyone had an opinion.  News stories. People on the left, people on the right.  People in the middle. People who didn’t care. People who don’t like football. Gator Nation lovers.  Gator Haters. They were all buzzing.

Then the commercial aired.  That’s it?  Did I miss something? Are they going to show more later?  Nope, that its.

Now the day after, there is more buzz.  It was too soft.  It shows Focus on the Family is slipping. It shows how sneaking “they are” trying to get people to their website. Blaa, blaa, blaa….

Great job marketing guys. To use another sports metaphor, I think you hit a home run.

Today is National Wear Red Day

February 5th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in no way

National Wear Red Day asks everyone to wear something red to promote and raise awareness about heart disease and stroke. The goal of the movement is ambitious: to reduce coronary heart disease and stroke risk by 25%.

logoGoRed

I can relate to the fact that many people are surprised each year by a heart related medical incident.  Most people do not know that the number one killer of women is heart disease.  Women experience a high number of heart attacks every year, many times ignoring warning symptoms until its too late.

I have had a lot of surprises this past year, and even with all the difficulty it has brought my way, I appreciate everyday more than ever.  I urge everyone, especially you ladies out there, to not ignore something that just doesn’t “feel right”, get into your doctor and get checked out, try and eat healthy, and try to exercise on a regular basis. logoAmericanHeart

Don’t become a statistic.

My brother made me..

January 25th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in no way

I guess gone are the days when your kids at night slip a flashlight under the covers and read a book past bedtime.  I’m not sure how many kids actually have done that over the years, but it makes for good movie moments.  I do remember my kids sneaking a phone (not a c-phone) into bed and talking under the covers in whispers that “no one” else heard.  My daughter told me today about some “under the cover sneaking” my grandsons have been doing.  Her boys are of that generation who have been born into the electronic world of c-phones, laptop computers, cable TV with 150+ channels, video games that make pong appear to be less relevant than an abacus, and the internet.

katharines_boys

They put the boys to bed in their respective bedrooms and later in the night heard some giggles.  Investigation revealed that each boy was still in his room, in his bed, under the covers, BUT, not asleep.  It seems that through utilizing the power of WIFI in their home and the internet they were playing a game against each other on their DS’s.

So now, when you send your kids to bed, you need to check them for their e-toys, because they can still play without even getting out of bed.

You’ve got to love have creative that is.  Oh yea, somethings don’t change.  When they got caught, the younger one said his older brother made him do it.  Nice try Andrew.
